A Mother’s Day Idea
How did you celebrate Mother’s Day? Whether you’re a mom to a human or an animal, last Sunday was a day to celebrate yourself. For the past 8 years, I’ve spent Mother’s Day at our Nevada Junior Livestock Show, cleaning up the show. That means breaking down pens, cleaning up the RV site, cleaning out stalls, hauling animals back home, etc. It is a massive labor of love for our kids, and Mother’s Day has always fallen on the last day of the show, which is also the clean up and check out day. My husband and kids have made it special by giving me gifts or cooking some food while we’re preparing to clean up the pens. In all honesty, I’m looking forward to the day when our youngest is done showing animals at the youth level. It is a ton of work for the entire family- just ask any livestock showing family!
In the next few years, my vision is to spend Mother’s Day on a cruise ship with my mom, my husband, and our adult kids. We don’t have any grandkids (just grandpets), but if we did, they’d come for sure!
A multigenerational cruise offers something for every age group, and gives you the ability to travel together while also enjoying your own space. Yes, you could rent a giant house somewhere fun together, but then you have to think about cleaning, meal prep, planning activities, and more. On a cruise ship, all of that is handled for you.
If your sheets need to be changed, or your trash is getting full, you have daily housekeeping from your cabin steward. Fun fact: we always love getting to know our cabin steward on cruises. They are fun to talk with and share some cool information about the ship and their lives. I highly recommend getting to know them!
Do you want a snack and don’t want to run to the store or call uber eats? Ships all have ways to get snacks (or at least any ship I recommend will have ways to get snacks! Anyone who knows me well, knows I like to snack).
When it’s time for meals, you have your pick between specialty restaurants, buffets, or quick things like pizza or burgers. When some of your multigenerational group wants hamburgers and the others want a sit down Italian meal, that’s pretty complicated at a land vacation in a home rental. It involves a lot of logistics. On a cruise, you literally just eat at the restaurant or location that suits your mood. The best part is that there is ZERO prep or clean up!
Activities are another spot where a cruise really shines. What do you do if you’re at a house rental and ¼ of the group wants to play games, a ¼ of the group wants to drive down to the pool, a ¼ of the group wants to sleep (no judgement here), and ¼ of the group wants to play sports? If you have many cars, and enough people, then yes, you can make all of that happen, even if it’s a bit chaotic. On a cruise ship, those activities are all right on the ship, and people can go their separate ways, gathering for meals or other events.
Traveling together, especially on a cruise, can be such a unique experience, and one where the details are handled so you can just enjoy your time together!
If you’re looking to plan Mother’s Day on a ship next year, NOW is actually the very best time to reserve that. Cruise ships book out so much farther in advance than just about any other type of travel. The deposits are often minimal, and the final pricing can often be lower than what was first quoted (I re-price cruises for clients quite often, when I see the cost go down). You have the best availability for cabin location when you book your cruise 1+ year in advance.
